Treatment

Chosen Song
This is our chosen song. We have chosen it because the lyrics include the conventional theme of relationships and also contains elements associated with our genre. The pace of the song changes throughout from a slow pace to a fast pace and then back to slow at times, this is great as it allows us to produce a clear idea as the slow pace connotes that everything seems ok, but when the fast pace kicks in it highlights how things are going to become messed up. The song also has a lighter indie rock sound which was preferred by our target audience.

Our video will follow a young female on her downward spiral into self-destruction after ending an unhealthy relationship.

The collage below indicates the type of visuals we wish to achieve while producing our video. We got these images from the music videos that we looked at in our research.

Costume

Luke's Costume:

Luke has the typical indie rock style that is common in the genre.

He wears a white t-shirt because, in the genre we found that the male villains tend to wear white to hide their darker side. Alongside the idea that his costume will provoke identification within the audience as this is a style that most are aware of and emphasises his middle/lower class status connoting that he is not of a higher importance.

Alice's Costume:

Alice is the protagonist of the music video, this challenges the typical codes and conventions as in this genre males are usually the protagonist. But, in some form Alice is not challenging codes and conventions as she is being portrayed as weak and can't be without the male (the 'Princess') like many other females in the genre. Also, Alice does have the typical indie rock style that is common in the genre.

The outfit that will be the most dominant will be the first outfit in this image(leather jacket, tie dye vest, ripped tights, mini skirt and studded high heels) as it will be worn on many occasions that are not flashbacks. But, it will get a grungy look to it over the course of the video to show the effect the events have had.

Timeline

Reference to film

We had inspiration from the characters Blaze and Marcus from the film 'The Last Song', as their relationship is similar to the one that we want to portray. This is due to Marcus having a temper and gets angry at his girlfriend, where as Blaze is weepy and distressed most of the time. In addition to this, their appearance links well to the indie rock genre as they are mainly dressed in black and Blaze has the heavy make up and ripped clothing showing her lack of care in appearance. The mise en scene portrays their personality and mood.

Reference to music videos

Other music videos have heavily influenced our planning, mainly 'Kodaline - High Hopes', The 1975 - Robbers, 'The Neighbourhood - Let it Go'.  and 'Jake Bugg - Seen it all'
We put together an assortment of shots in order to show the types of mise en scene and camera work we aim to use in our video.

Storyboard

We produced a storyboard in order to get a basic idea of what our video will look like when it has been edited together. It also allows us to know what camera shots and movements to incorporate into our video. From producing the storyboard we can see what shots we need to include more of, for instance, we need more close ups on Alice in order for our audience to familiarise with her and understand that she is the protagonist. We have also seen that we shall incorporate more flashbacks in certain scenes, like the scene where Alice picks up the alcohol bottle for the first time, this will allow the audience to understand why she has chosen to consume alcohol.

Scene 1: (On the streets) Alice is walking amongst her friends but she is excluded a little bit as she is out casting herself. Her ex is among her group of friends and seeing him gets too much to handle so it leads to her running away from the group.

Scene 2: After the events of seeing Luke and running away from the group, Alice ends up at home where she tries to distract herself by reading and watching TV, but nothing works. Then she notices bottles of alcohol on the table which she is enticed by.

Scene 3: (Night time setting on the streets) This scene emphasises what has happened to Alice and shows that she did indeed chose to drink the alcohol. This scene shows her and her downward spiral showing a rough lifestyle she has led herself into. To connote why she has chosen this lifestyle there will be a montage of flashbacks to show the breakdown of her relationship with Luke.

Scene 4: Alice's thoughts gets too much to handle and they are rushing around her mind and she is feeling a mixture of emotions. This leads her to getting into the car drunk.

The fact that we are using a non-chronological narrative links with what our target audience expect and prefer. So by using this narrative our video will appeal more to our audience meaning that our artist will get more recognition and the video will get more views, hopefully leading to more album sales. The narrative is also story and not performance, this is because it is more effective and our audience would rather have a story based video rather than a performance based one.

Comparison of storyboard photos and music videos

We will use conventional camera shots used in 'Indie rock' music videos in order to show that we have taken the genre into consideration while planning.

Locations
We have chosen generic settings of streets and houses to provoke identification among the audience. However, we will use a night time setting to create a darker atmosphere that parallels her mental state. we have chosen these locations also as they are locations that are stereotypically linked with our target audience as many believe that young people like to spend time on the streets causing trouble or spend too much time locked away at home on the internet etc.. so by choosing these locations, audience member can identify either way.
